Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Participates in and supports capacity planning and the development of long-term strategic goals for Linux systems and software in conjunction with end-users and department managers.
  • Coordinates with network engineering, database administration functions and customers to implement, install, and configure Linux systems and software that utilize industry best practices to meet corporate objectives
  • Implements policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure Linux system security through secure system access, monitoring, control, and routine security evaluations
  • Performs standard configuration, management, and maintenance tasks for related file systems, input/output systems, networking, clustering, storage, and applications
  • Reviews and deploys Linux system releases and vendor-supplied patches according to best practices
  • Anticipates, mitigates, identifies, troubleshoots, and resolves hardware and software problems on all Linux systems
  • Monitors, tests, and tunes system performance; preserve and provide system log files as needed
  • Recommends and executes modifications to Linux systems in order to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance
  • Conducts research on Linux -related hardware and software in support of procurement and system development efforts
  • Ensures Linux -based systems comply with policies, standards, licensing agreements, configuration guidelines, and best-practices for maintaining regulatory compliance
  • Ensures secure user access and role validation processes
  • Performs Linux server/database transaction and security audits leading to identification and mitigation of security threats to enterprise data. Recommend and implement changes where necessary
  • Creates required reports in response to business user needs
  • Creates Linux shell scripts
  • Manages and/or provides guidance to junior members of the team and develops, documents, and maintains Linux systems documentation for educating new staff
  • Member of on-call rotation to provide 24 X 7 support to critical systems and ensure availability objectives are met.
  • Perform client consulting in a specialized area of technology (Networking, Unified Communications, Systems, Virtualization, and Storage).
  • Design plan, and implement solutions using the latest technology.
  • Provide innovative technical solutions to complex hardware/software problems.
  • Provide design, implementation, technical support services and consulting to Managed Services clients to meet their business needs.
  • Understand and Deliver Managed Services offerings as outlined in the CDW Service Descriptions and Service Catalog.
  • Understand and follow the processes and procedures defined in the CDW Standard Operating Procedures manual (SOP).
  • Provide detailed and effective communication to internal and external customers.
  • Clearly and concisely articulate problems and solutions for issues to clients both over the phone, via e-mail and in person.
  • Conduct throughput analysis, problem solving, and infrastructure planning.
  • Participate in various client projects intended to continually improve/upgrade technology infrastructures.
  • Create and execute test plans to meet project requirements for assigned components.
  • Identify and communicate potential opportunities for cross-selling to the sales team.
  • Manage time and expense to meet or exceed expectations defined in the Statement of Work.
  • Provide high quality content deliverables using the appropriate document templates.
  • Ensure solution is implemented as designed to the customer’s satisfaction and approval
  • As a Senior Engineer provide technical services with no supervision from Supervisors, Team Leads, and Technology Owners.
  • Ability to follow through with tasks, projects, troubleshooting with no supervision.
  • Serve as technical point of contact on customer engagements, and internal projects.
  • Conducts/leads design workshops for complex designs to meet customer, business and technical objectives.
  • Proactively develops plans and activities to avoid problems.
  • Educates the customer on solution as appropriate throughout the life of the project or service life.
  • Complete projects/tasks on a timely basis, according to commitments made to stakeholders and management.
  • Performs scopes of work as detailed in implementation plans assigned (system builds, test plans, documentation, training, etc.).
  • Handles several tasks simultaneously (i.e.: pre-sales, troubleshoots and develops internal network, responds to emergencies).
  • Communicates with Engineering Manager all events that are not anticipated (new product requirements, equipment failure, design changes, schedule changes).

Education and/or Experience Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field; equivalent experience acceptable

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of RHEL, Ubuntu and/or SUSE Linux  platform(s)
  • Demonstrated Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining Linux servers, networks, and clusters
  • Demonstrated experience with hardware and software troubleshooting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of coding using Perl, CGI, C, shell and bash scripting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current network hardware and standards, including Cisco Borderless network routing and switching and UCS technologies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of TCP/IP protocols, firewall management, system virtualization technologies and database administration
  • Demonstrated customer service skills
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Demonstrated communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research into Linux issues and products
  • Demonstrated ability to work in team environment
  • Capable of resolving critical issues in a time sensitive manner, cognizant of requisite service levels.
  • Ability to establish customer trust and confidence in the CDW Managed Services

Preferred Qualifications

  • One of the following certifications :
    • LPIC-3
    • LPIC-2
    • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
    • Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)
  • Experience with Solaris 10 & 11(s), previous versions are a plus
  • Experience with virtualization technologies and hypervisors such as Hyper-V and/or vSphere
  • Experience with systems automation (e.g. Puppet/Chef/Ansible/Salt)
  • Hands-on experience in a large Data Center environment
  • ITIL Foundations Certification
