We Stand Together

February 18, 2021  |   Black-history-month

February marks the celebration of Black History Month. CDW’s Business Resource Group, Black Excellence Unlimited (BeU) is taking every opportunity to create connection and help educate coworkers on the significance of Black History Month, while continuing the momentum of educating, participating and advocating. The mission of BeU is as follows: “To provide resources and development opportunities for CDW’s Black coworkers that enables them to achieve excellence and have a positive impact on our customers and community.”

Matt Milam, Co-Chair of BeU, explained what this organization means to him:

“BeU has left an extremely impactful mark on not only my professional life but also in my personal life. Professionally it has given me additional purpose and reinforced my belief that as I’ve progressed in my own career, a need and desire still exists to make the path for others that follow to be less arduous and more gratifying. Personally it has helped to remind me that work still needs to be done to acknowledge the challenges that many Black coworkers face and to develop practices to ensure that everyone has a fair and equitable seat at the table moving forward; never more important than now as I look at my own growing family and yearn for a better tomorrow for them.”

Earlier this month, BeU hosted their signature event to celebrate Black History Month with the theme, We Stand Together. In these uncertain times, we are faced with social injustices and social issues that can be hard to manage. The event was designed to help coworkers navigate these issues and find a way forward. Kelia Byrd, Co-Chair of BeU, kicked off the event with a poem:

We Stand Together by Kelia Byrd

We stand…because those before us had dreams
We stand…for the lives lost on the road to freedom
We stand…for our families and the future of our youths
We stand…because we have grown weary hiding behind false smiles
We stand…because we are ready to embrace this journey
We stand…because sitting back and watching is no longer a viable option
We stand…to grab the baton because it is now the time to run our leg of the race to liberty
We stand…because we hear the cries of the falling for justice
We stand…because we are not finished yet…but we just begun
We stand…to speak up for matters that may not concern us but our love for our fellow neighbor is that great
We stand…because knowledge and wisdom has forced us upright
We stand…even when there is nothing left, and standing has become difficult without support
United and strong…we stand…We stand together!

Kelia shared, “As new Co-Chair of BeU, I hope to continue to build upon the great foundation that my predecessors left behind. Diversity and inclusion are reflected every day in our people, culture, and our work, but what’s even better is that we constantly see an eagerness from our coworkers to help educate themselves. I am honored at the opportunity to keep the mission moving forward and provide impactful content and opportunities.”
